How to heal from burnout.

Hi. I'm Tracy Douglas - Your GenX Therapist

I specialize in working with highly successful GenX professionals who have challenges with ADHD, burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma, transitions like divorce, blending families, or empty nests, and loving someone who’s struggling with substance abuse or addiction.

Here is something I firmly believe. Every person who walks through my door or shows up on my video screen is the best kind of human.

The kind of human who orients towards hope, healing, and growth, and I’d be so honored to get to help you create the life you want to have.

I’m proud to say I’m very good at what I do not only because I’ve successfully helped so many others with these struggles as a mental health therapist, but also because I’ve had personal experience, as a fellow human in this crazy ass world, overcoming all of challenges for myself and my beloveds.

So you can trust me when I say, “I get it!”

The time I’ve spent with Tracy has been transformative. I’ve had a handful of counselors through the years, and they all helped to some degree, yet I felt no different. I knew more about myself, but I didn’t feel different until I began working with Tracy.

To simply state my own journey, I’ve been looking to open a deeper emotional connection within myself and others. To stop being afraid and to reconcile the trauma and abuse I suffered in childhood. The progress I’ve made from being unable to mention or acknowledge what happened to being able to mention it here is proof of her amazing work. I would not be the person I am today without her, and I wonder if I would even be here to write this if not for her.

She’s exactly what her client needs when they need it. Whether that’s a by the book therapist one day to a friend to cry with the next, she adapts and innovates on the fly, only to the comfort level one can tolerate in the moment. What I do know is that I am always getting her best and the best care possible.

I could fill pages of praise, lines and lines of commendation, but the summary of it all would be that Tracy Douglas is a one in a million therapist. I wholeheartedly recommend Tracy with full confidence that she will help others with the same kindness and care she has provided not only to myself but countless others.

Tracy and I have worked together since 2013. I’ve been a School Psychologist in the Janesville School District for over 25 years. I’ve worked with Tracy when she worked in day treatment, a community outpatient mental health setting, and now in private practice. Tracy has been instrumental in supporting students to both improve their mental health and with providing excellent recommendations to our school professionals on how to support their mental wellbeing and educational success. I’ve referred many students to Tracy, specifically, as I know they will be provided the highest level of care.

Tracy is kind, compassionate, extremely knowledgeable, and takes the time necessary to coordinate care in an effective manner. I’ve seen her make progress with children and adolescents with hom other community therapists were unable to.

She’s taken time to educate me on student’s mental health needs, when I’ve requested information. She’s advocated for her clients to obtain the support they need at home, in the community, and in the educational setting. She’s taught individuals skills they need to achieve their goals, regardless of, oftentimes, being in difficult circumstances.

Remember, every storm runs out of rain—you’re headed towards clearer skies.

Anxiety

Anxiety makes your mind feel like a dangerous wilderness, a sprawling landscape of tangled thoughts and prickly worries.

  • Your body, once a trusted companion, feels like it’s betraying you.
  • Your stomach churns, your heart hammers frantically, and sleep is a distant memory replaced by panicked nights replaying conversations as you dissect words for hidden slights or for something you said that you ache over and regret.
  • Days are a blur of frantic energy at home and at work, a desperate attempt to outrun the avalanche of doubt that threatens to bury you.
  • You crave clarity, peace, and rest.

Therapy can be a guide through the thorny undergrowth of your fears. Learn to silence the inner critic, release your fears, and bring your body back into balance.

ADHD

The ADHD mind can be like a browser with too many open tabs. Ideas, exciting at first, can quickly become overwhelming, leaving unfinished tasks and missed deadlines in their wake.

The pressure feels like a constant system overload, bleeding into your personal life. Strained relationships and a simmering frustration with yourself are all too familiar. Ignoring it doesn’t fix the problem, it just exacerbates the crash.

Therapy can be your IT specialist, helping you prioritize tasks, manage the influx of information, and create a system for optimal productivity.

Therapy can be a key to unlocking the full potential of your mental operating system, both at work and at home so your mind can still be a hub of fabulous creativity, but with the formidable ability to channel it into focused action and personal and professional success.

Burnout

Do you even remember the last time you felt truly energized? Once upon a time, you juggled work, family, and dreams with a seemingly endless battery.

Now, each task feels like a struggle, draining the last drop of your juice. Deadlines scream “LOW BATTERY” in your face, and burnout looms like a blackout.

You’re exhausted, disconnected, a shadow of your vibrant self. Ignoring the low-battery signal won’t make it go away. Therapy is your charging station.

We’ll help you identify what’s draining your energy, develop strategies to manage your workload and responsibilities, and create a sustainable system for self-care.

Reconnect to a life where your battery is consistently charged, allowing you to plug back into a life of fulfillment and well-being, both at work and at home.

Even when you feel lost, remember: the most beautiful discoveries often happen in uncharted territories.

Depression

Depression is an oppressive darkness burdening your being, a thick fog that chokes the light and steals the color from everything you see. The world outside seems vibrant, but you can’t reach it so you retreat further into yourself, hopeless and in despair.

Each day feels like you’re wading through a muddy swamp. Simple tasks at home or at work loom like insurmountable obstacles.

Therapy offers a lifeline, a skilled hand reaching through the fog.

Together, we will uncover the root causes of your pain to allow the light of clarity and hope to shine. While our future may never be entirely free of shadows, you can recover the vibrancy and joy of life with a newfound resilience.

Relationships and Addiction

Your love story was a beautiful one once, filled with chapters of laughter, shared dreams, goals celebrated, and a bright future you were going to share together.

Now, it feels like a dark fairy tale, addiction playing the role of the villain, stealing the joy and trust from your lives. You keep on reliving the same nightmarish chapter over and over as promises to stop are broken time and again.

While your story might take unexpected turns, the ending forever altered, through therapy, we can empower you to create your own narrative.

There will be losses to grieve and hard decisions to make, but therapy can help you write a new ending for yourself, one created with authenticity and acceptance, to help you have the resilience you need to face the unwritten chapters ahead.

Transitions

Life, like the seasons, undergoes constant change. Spring’s hopeful buds of new beginnings can be met with the unexpected showers of loss or disappointment.

Summer’s warmth of established routines can give way to the scorching uncertainty of career shifts or unexpected family challenges.

Autumn’s reflective harvest of past experiences can be bittersweet, reminding us of what’s left behind even as we gather the fruits of our labors.

And winter’s introspective quiet, while providing a time for rest and renewal, can also feel isolating and daunting as passings and endings like death and divorce, visit our lives.

Dismayed and disoriented, we may feel unprepared for the sudden chill of a challenge or overwhelmed by the abundance of possibilities during a period of growth.

Therapy can be your guide through these seasonal shifts. Together, we’ll explore the emotions that arise, identify the seeds you want to plant for the future, and build resilience to weather any storm.

Don’t navigate life’s changing seasons alone. Discover the beauty and growth that awaits in each new chapter.

Trauma

Have you ever been caught in a sudden, violent storm, disoriented by the blinding flash and the deafening roar? The afterimage lingers, a constant reminder of the chaos. Trauma, big or small, feels eerily similar.

It’s like a tornado that overwhelms your defenses, leaving you isolated and adrift. Or a steady monsoon that doesn’t seem brutal, but is devastating in its persistent flooding.

Your inner compass spins, every direction uncertain. You might feel broken, alone, hopeless – a part of you stolen. Trust is shattered. Unpredictable emotions and responses blindside you and trauma even manifests physically: headaches, fatigue, and unexplained physical pain.

You don’t have to weather this storm alone. Therapy is your safe harbor.

Together, we’ll navigate the emotions, rebuild your compass, and help you find peace. You can be empowered to create a future free of the storm’s afterimage – one filled with trust, connection, and belonging.

When it feels like you’re stuck, sometimes that’s the universe telling you it’s time for a breakthrough.

Individual therapy, also known as talk therapy or psychotherapy, is a process where a person meets with a licensed therapist to discuss thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a confidential setting. It works not only by creating a safe space for clients to explore personal challenges, gain insights, and develop coping strategies, but also by providing targeted experiential work to help with healing.

For me? I think that experiential piece is HUGE! How can you DO differently until you’ve EXPERIENCED differently?! I know that’s the way I’ve learned and healed! Us therapists use various techniques which we tailor to individual needs, helping clients understand their experiences, let go of old pain, and find clarity to foster personal growth to, yes, Imma use this word again, EXPERIENCE peace and joy. .

Individual therapy can address a wonderfully wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress management, relationship challenges, trauma, grief, and self-esteem issues. It’s also beneficial for individuals seeking to improve their emotional well-being, navigate life transitions, or develop healthier coping mechanisms.

When we think of the multitude of challenges life presents, it can be nourishing and strengthening to have someone focused on you and only you, which, come on now, isn’t something that gets to happen as often as we really need. A skilled, effective mental health counselor will ensure that each therapy session is personalized to meet the specific needs and goals of the client.

While I can’t give you a specific answer, what I can share is that the duration of individual therapy varies depending on the individual’s needs and goals. Typically, sessions last about 55 minutes and are held weekly or bi-weekly. At the start, I tend to encourage weekly so we can build and maintain momentum, however, I also completely understand how there can be so many demands on time that every other week is what’s best for some clients.

The overall length of therapy can range from a few sessions to several months or even years, depending on the complexity of the issues being addressed and the progress made during treatment. However long the period of time, my clients are used to me checking in with them consistently to ensure that we’re doing the work they want done.

Choosing the right therapist is CRUCIAL for effective therapy. A great place to start is by evaluating their qualifications, experience, and areas of specialization. For example, you might consider a therapist like me, who has extensive training and expertise in various therapeutic approaches. It’s also so important to find someone with whom you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings.

(Yes, it might be hard, especially as therapy begins, but if you find yourself in a constant state of discomfort after a few sessions because your therapist doesn’t really get you or if you don’t really dig their vibe, then, I betcha they’re really not right for you.) Scheduling initial consultations can help you discuss your needs and assess their approach so you can rule potential therapists in or out as options. Look for a therapist who uses evidence-based techniques and demonstrates empathy and understanding. Trust your instincts—finding the right fit is key to your therapeutic success.
